Natural light is one of the key features that people look for in a home. It can make a space feel larger, lighter, brighter and more welcoming. It is seen as such an important feature that the Royal Institute of British Architects launched a campaign called Homewise that calls for a minimum standard of space and light within buildings.

But did you know that natural light has many benefits on your life including the following:

1.    Your health and well-being

Natural light is important for our immune system, it stimulates the body to produce vitamin D, helps us have healthier bones, regulates our circadian rhythm – the daily cycle of activity and sleep - and helps to stimulate positive moods. We also know that light is antibacterial and it makes us feel good. It encourages us to get outside and enjoy the fresh air.

2.    Eco credentials

Environmentally friendly designers put a lot of thought into how many windows a home should have and where they are placed. Maximising the amount of natural light that enters your home reduces the amount of energy you need to use to run the house. You don’t need to put as many lights on and it allows the sun to warm your rooms, reducing the need to use energy to do these things.

3.    Natural sunlight is economical

By allowing windows to let as much natural sunlight into your home as possible you can also save money and reduce your utility bills. If you design your home so that the rooms you use the most during the day receive the maximum light possible, you won’t have to flip your light switch until the sun sets. You will also be able to lower the thermostat by taking advantage of the solar heat.

If you want to introduce more natural daylight into your home you can add new windows and skylights, have glass sliding doors or bi-folds to create a wall of daylight and convert solid doors to glazed doors.

You can also introduce lighter colours to your walls to make dark spaces feel lighter and brighter as it reflects natural light rather than absorbing it, like darker colours do. Go for off-whites rather than brilliant whites as these can make a room feel cold. You can also paint the ceiling a couple of shades lighter than the walls to create the illusion of height and space.

Going glossy on kitchen and bathroom surfaces can help to reflect the natural light around a room and using metallic, glass or mirrored accessorises can help to diffuse light and make the most of the light available.

Floors can also be transformed to provide light reflecting qualities. Wood, ceramic or stone floors with a polished effect help to bounce light around a space much more than carpets. But if you do prefer carpets choosing light colours helps to open up the space.
